Den Menneskelige Dimension
In 1971, three events tipped the scales in favour of modernism in Denmark: the books BO-miljø by Ingrid Gehl, Livet mellem husene by Jan Gehl and a large-scale competition for low-rise buildings organised by the National Institute for Building Research showed that the human dimension had been forgotten in both construction and urban planning. The messages immediately resonated with lay people who had witnessed brutal street break-ups, the demolition of entire neighbourhoods and bleak and forbidding crane architecture. Among the experts, on the other hand, the response was initially rather reserved. But ideas prevailed, cars were pushed out of city centres, and a number of developments evidenced greater care for people. City centres, both in Denmark and around the world, have inherited the legacy of the two authors. Den Menneskelige Dimension reprints the groundbreaking original publications of Ingrid and Jan Gehl and takes a look at 50 years of urban development.
